SASA President column – September 2012
Oct 15, 2012
The SASA National Committee Members for 2012/2013 are:
· Sbu Ncube – Immediate Past President
· Jenny Reid – National President
· Koos van Rooyen – National Vice President and Branch Chairman of Western Cape
· Gerhardt Oosthuizen – Gauteng Branch Chairman
· Sharon Numan – KwaZulu-Natal Branch Chairman
Also sitting on the SASA National Committee are representatives from Contact Publications, The South African Institute of Security and the SASA National Administrator.
The National Committee have passed a special resolution confirming a Gold Class Affiliate Membership—this will enable members or potential members to have Gold Class benefits even if they are not part of SD6 in the industry.
In a bid to promote SASA’s objectives and our continuous Gold Class Membership drive, SASA has been represented at a number of leading industry conferences, including: The ASIS Conference in Cape Town, the Camprosa Conference, as well as the recent Counter Business Intelligence Conference. The response from the industry has been highly encouraging and our efforts have been well received by members of the industry. SASA will also be getting further involved in industry events such as IFSEC South Africa. We are currently in discussions with the show organisers to see how we can expand our involvement. We have also met with the Ethics Institute and are discussions with them about promoting SASA through their programmes.
The security industry has changed significantly over recent years and with this, we have recognised the need to update and streamline some of our processes and procedures. More communication will follow on this in due course. We are also currently looking at introducing a publicity campaign which will see SASA’s objectives communicated to both trade and mainstream media. It is important that we reach the consumer of security services and communicate to them why it’s so important to only use compliant security companies. This is all part of our continuous compliance drive.
One of the criticisms of the outgoing committee was that we did not communicate effectively with our members. We want to assure our members that this was never our intention. Our members are always are top priority and we are always open to hearing from you what we can do to address any of your industry concerns.
In a 2011 survey, SASA members requested communication via email. This is the channel of communication we will continue to use to radiate information, news and updates from within the association. If you would prefer any other means of communication, please do not hesitate to contact us.
From my side, I also hope to use this column to communicate with our members as well. It’s a great platform to raise issues, provide feedback and let you know what’s happening at SASA and in the industry. If you have anything you would like to raise, please do contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org or Martina, at our National Office on 083 650 4981.
